What happens at each stage

Stage 1 — Preparation (1–2 weeks)

Most of the “waiting” happens before you apply. Gather two to three years of tax returns, interim financials, bank statements, and a personal financial statement. Businesses with documents ready on day one move to the front of the line.

Stage 2 — Lender application and underwriting (1–3 weeks)

Your chosen lender reviews eligibility, pulls credit, and packages the loan. A strong application can move through in days; incomplete or sloppy applications get kicked back for clarification.

Stage 3 — SBA review (5–10 business days)

Once the lender submits, the SBA reviews the package. For standard 7(a) loans this typically takes about a week. SBA Express is much faster — the SBA responds in roughly 36 hours.

Stage 4 — Closing and funding (1–2 weeks)

After approval there are final conditions: an appraisal or environmental review (for real estate), legal paperwork, and the loan closing. Funding usually follows within days of closing.

What slows the process down

  • Incomplete documents — the #1 cause of delay.
  • Appraisals — real estate deals wait on third-party appraisers.
  • Credit or tax issues — unresolved liens, or a history that needs a letter of explanation.
  • Slow responses — every day you wait to answer a lender question adds days to the total.

How to get funded faster

  • Use the SBA loan document checklist before you talk to a lender (see our 7(a) requirements guide).
  • Ask lenders about SBA Express if your loan is $500K or less.
  • Apply to lenders who specialize in your situation — a community bank that does SBA lending is often faster than a national one.
  • Respond to every request within 24 hours.
